Color Trends for 2010 and Beyond

They've got names you wouldn't expect - like Cold Stare, Double Vision and Out of Sight - but they have a direct impact on Ford's brand identity, warranty, production and environmental objectives.
They are exterior paints. They are also big business because they are pivotal to the customer experience. According to Ford Motor Company research, 39 percent of consumers say they will walk out of a dealership if it doesn’t have a vehicle they want in their color of choice.

This fall, the hot new vehicles in Ford, Lincoln and Mercury showrooms will feature some of the trendiest hues, most expressive metallics and largest color range ever. But, the work doesn't stop there.

Looking beyond 2007, the colorists at the PPG Global Design and Color Marketing Team examine cultural and lifestyle trends to create cutting-edge color palettes and special effects that meet automakers' goals.
"One of the first things you notice about a vehicle is the color," said PPG's Jane Harrington, manager, color styling, automotive coatings. "This year's color show highlights our viewpoint on color, trends, technology and the global automotive market."

For the 2010 - 2011 model years, they have developed 105 exterior colors and more than 25 interior color concepts for automakers' consideration. Among the candidates are: Cold Stare, a tinted silver with a steel blue highlight; Double Vision, a medium green with a red Double Vision and hue-shifting highlight; Out of Sight, a soft brown with a blue hue-shifting highlight; and Quest, a citrus-inspired yellow metallic.

In addition to color trend forecasting, the company develops new paint technologies to enhance automotive design and exceed appearance requirements. This year, the company demonstrated improvements in special effect pigments. New nanopigment technology is being incorporated into OEM coating systems, enabling designers to create new color landscapes.

Jerry R. Koenigsmark is PPG manager of color design, North America automotive coatings. "To remain a leader in color design, our methods must be outside the normal mode of thinking. PPG continues to create unique ways of using effect pigments that result in innovative looks and add a new dimension to color and technology."

So, while you may salivate over the new custom deep, spicy red – called Candy Apple Red – featured on the 2008 Mustang, your next pony might be finished in Gleam, an icy green with an intense gold flash from PPG.

- a Cold Stare (hideg bámulás): sötét ezüst acélkék fénnyel
- a Double Vision (kettős vizió): közép zöld piros fénnyel
- Out of Sight (látóhatáron kívül): kellemes barna kék fénnyel
- Quest (felkutatás): citrus félék által ihletet metál fényezés
